Personal Experience
Our experience on Tirana's River


We made our way across the boulevard,passed another street and an old bridge came on sight..
From what we could see, the river was trashed, full of garbage and sewage that had accumulated over the years
even though a project was made to fix the pedestrian path..

The Effects of this Pollution

The careless dumping of waste and garbage into the Tirana s River has detrimental effects on the surrounding community, many of which the contributors may not be entirely aware of.
What is worse many of these people have not been educated on how the river’s poor health can affect them if they totally forget about the river.
Finally, the clearest and most obvious effect of the pollution of the river  is the inability for wildlife to survive in or around it, which I saw firsthand. The river’s ‘dead zone’ status means that, because of the severe pollution, there is limited oxygen in the water and it is impossible for anything to grow in or around it. As a result, this river, a thriving source of wildlife and the community as long as they don't give the right attention to it.

What must be done?
When it comes down to it, the Tiran River’s bad state is the result of rapid population growth, and the city’s subsequent inability to keep up in terms of infrastructure and basic waste services.The existing sewage systems are old and poorly constructed resulting in regular breakage and make the river fully trashed. Realistically ,it is unlikely that the population of the city is going to stop growing so therefore the pollution is going to increase more unless we as a community teach ourselves how to save the river ,how to use it in a proper way and how to stop damaging it more.

The key to cleaning up the river is a combination of increased education on why the river needs to be saved and on how each individual can stop contributing to the problem. ,making the river a Spot. Making the river a playground,a relaxing space including all the facilities that will make it more interesting and will make the people to save what it is and start doing more.

A healthy river is a living river, with clean vitalwater that supports a diversity of aquatic life.The more diverse the ecology within the river the more resilient it can be to the inevitable inflows of pollution, be them from urban or agricultural runoff, sewage or industry.  Biomatrix specialises in river restoration.Floating Ecosystems are engineered to improve water quality within rivers and canals as they increase aquatic life, leading to a balanced and revitalised waterways.




Albula 

Its an open sou re device for polluted waters is an interactive device that addresses the pollution crisis of the Tiber river and its degradation. The installation is both urban space and metaphor of the water mills that populated the river in the past , recalling a forgotten popular imagination. 
 The project proposes a suspended integrated system of phytoremediation, fulfilling requests of meeting, cooling and shading. The plant species choice is determined on the basis of information's about Tiber water pollution in 2015 .
In this configuration, the installation manages a total of 10,000 liters of water, purifying 2,000 liters collected directly from the Roman river and poured in the first three rows of sacks. The clean water obtained at the end of the phytoremediation cycle can be used for human use in accordance with existing rules.
The installation is composed by four elements: a platform/raft, a T shaped metal structure -to which the phytoremediation sacks are hooked- the waterwheel and the collecting tank. The covering consists of a layer of Tiber water, contained inside the sacks, which provides shade in the public space below. Each sack is designed as a micro-ecosystem with different size, in which the plants behave as natural pumps capable of absorbing pathogens, chemicals and heavy metals.
The interaction between man and phytoremediation system is provided by Arduino, a programmable low-cost circuit board able to interact with the environment in which it is located. The position of the body is detected by the different ultrasonic proximity sensors connected via the card to an electric motor which, by operating the hydraulic wheel, triggers the fall water flow inside the sacks.


Phytoremediation is a bioremediation process that uses various types of plants to remove, transfer, stabilize, and/or destroy contaminants in the soil and groundwater. There are several different types of phytoremediation mechanisms. 
These are:
  1.  Rhizosphere biodegradation. In this process, the plant releases natural substances through its roots, supplying nutrients to microorganisms in the soil. The microorganisms enhance biological degradation.
  2.  Phyto-stabilization. In this process, chemical compounds produced by the plant immobilize contaminants, rather than degrade them.
  3. Hydroponic Systems for Treating Water Streams . Rhizofiltration is similar to phyto-accumulation, but the plants used for cleanup are raised in greenhouses with their roots in water. This system can be used for ex-situ groundwater treatment. That is, groundwater is pumped to the surface to irrigate these plants. Typically hydroponic systems utilize an artificial soil medium, such as sand mixed with perlite or vermiculite. As the roots become saturated with contaminants, they are harvested and disposed of.
  4. Phyto-degradation. In this process, plants actually metabolize and destroy contaminants within plant tissues.
